Experience Acadia National Park’s Carriage Roads as Mr. Rockefeller Intended

Carriage drives are now offered daily at Wildwood Stables, located inside Acadia National Park one mile north of the park entrance at Seal Harbor. The horse-drawn “Acadia Sociable” carriages hold 12 to 16 people and give you a unique perspective of Acadia’s forests, mountains and coastline.  There are four different tours, available for one- or two-hour drives throughout the day.  Although they all book quickly, the most popular are the morning drive on Pemetic Mountain to “Cobblestone Bridge” and the sunset trip to Day Mountain.  Eight different drivers provide informative narratives about the history of the carriage roads…and often a lot more.  (Image above courtesy of Karen Pettengill.)  For more information, call 877-276-3622.

Join the Park’s Rangers and Learn Something New

July is here, with a robust calendar of ranger-led programs in Acadia National Park.  They include walks, talks, hikes, boat cruises, and campground programs.  Some are very casual (you drop in and a ranger is there to answer questions); others feature an impressive array of visuals, props, and audience participants.  There are even special programs for younger children.  Two of my favorites are: Stars Over Sand Beach, offered Tuesdays in July at 9:30pm, and Birds of Prey, on Friday afternoons at 3pm at Sieur de Monts Nature Center.  Did you know that owls and hawks eat their prey whole and then regurgitate the indigestible parts as pellets?   For more information, visit www.nps.gov/acad/.
