Guidebooks abound for Acadia National Park. After all, it has the only fiord in North America and the highest peak on the East Coast -- which in part accounts for why it is one of the ten most-visited national parks. Bar Harbor, a tourist attraction for over a century, also gets a lot of coverage by travel writers.
But friends visiting Acadia or renting our house in Somesville were always asking about our favorite places to explore, eat, and relax on Mount Desert Island. When we started going to MDI, we were lucky enough to have two friends with the collective wisdom of almost 80 years of island experience who shared with us their ‘favorites.’ We have compiled these tips from their secrets and our own special spots, mostly on the relatively unknown and postcard-perfect “quiet side” of Mount Desert Island.
We hope that they’ll help you create your own Acadian experience and you’ll share your finds with us.
